Today, Longmont CO-based storage vendor Dot Hill Systems is launching its new AssuredSAN 4004 products, which are available in 12Gb SAS and first-to-market 16Gb Gen 5 Fibre Channel/10Gb iSCSI converged interface models.

Dot Hill is a long-time maker of OEM storage products for over two decades, which in the last few years began to sell its own branded products with a 100% channel strategy. Initially focused on the SMB space, in mid-2012 they introduced two new offerings, the Dot Hill AssuredSAN Pro 5000 Series and the AssuredSAN 4000 Series. The 5000 series, which featured real-time tiering, was aimed at the upper midmarket and lower part of the enterprise, while the 4000 series was a broader midmarket play.

“The AssuredSAN 4000 Series moved us up the stack a little bit,” said Bruce Watkins, senior product marketing Manager at Dot Hill. “It had twice the performance of the 3000 series at 25% more cost.”

The new AssuredSAN 4004 solutions announced today are built on the company’s ninth-generation RAID stack. They boost performance significantly, with up to 100,000 input/output operations per second (IOPS), sequential read speeds of up to 6400 MB/second and sequential write speeds of up to 5300 MB/second.

“These translate into great business value,” Watkins said. “We promote the rock-solid nature of the product, which is the fastest midrange product in that space, and offers best-in-class price/performance.”

Watkins also emphasized that the new AssuredSAN 4004 arrays offer greater flexibility than competitive offerings. In addition to being available in a variety of configurations for 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch drives, each AssuredSAN converged interface storage array includes a four-port controller that can be easily configured in the field with four 16Gb Fibre Channel ports, four 10Gb iSCSI ports, or a combination of two 16Gb Fibre Channel and two 10Gb iSCSI ports. There is also a 12Gb SAS option.

“We anticipate that the demand for these will be around 70% Fibre Channel, 20% iSCSI and 10% SAS,” Watkins said. “Within the Fibre Channel, we think the majority will be 16 Gb. We also see the SAS growing. You can do some pretty slick things with 12 Gb SAS.”

Other new features include Data Management Services (DMS Software) support and a Full Drive Encryption option, although the latter won’t ship until the March 2014 timeframe.

Watkins said the AssuredSAN 4004 series has a strong vertical orientation.

“We are always looking to increase our vertical business because it’s higher margin and it’s stickier,” he said. “We are strong in telecom, media and entertainment, big data, oil and gas – not ones like financials and health care. Our vertical presence is up almost 40% since 2011.

“We are definitely making a push into the channel with some of the verticals,” Watkins added. “Some of our OEMs like Autodesk and Tektronix have helped us tweak the product and come up with targeted solutions for these verticals.”

The AssuredSAN 4004 series will begin shipping in volume worldwide to authorized Dot Hill channel partners this month. The average selling price for a 28.8 terabyte AssuredSAN 4824 16Gb Fibre Channel/10Gb iSCSI model will be approximately $55,200.

“It is the best price/performance in this band today,” Watkins said.
